On page 90 – 92 of The Card Magic of Edward Marlo there appears a brief but adequate description of the Two Shuffle Cull. This culling technique allows the performer to give the deck two riffle shuffles and stack a Full House in the process. This description is somewhat misleading although if you are willing to give the deck between 3 and 5 riffle shuffles you can indeed stack the desired cards.
Shuffle work seems to have a certain cache these days with quality sources and readily attainable references scarce. If this type of work interests you this may be a good starting point.
For the laymen that I perform for a multiple shift, a casual false cut and a bottom deal will leave pretty much the same impression. Maybe your circumstances are different. The Card Magic of Edward Marlo is available in as an eBook from L & L publishing. Hard cover copies are available through private sales. After Revolutionary Card Technique this is the second Marlo volume added to my collection.
The binding is high quality with nice heavy paper and clear illustrations. It is a large book full of Marlo’s methods, routines and techniques 365 pages in all. There is plenty of ridiculously good card magic to be found in here. Mental Topper mentioned by John Racherbaumer in the introduction is a very strong routine that serves as a great opener to any close up set. If this were released to day there would be video trailers, all kinds of hype and then there would appear a single trick DVD for $40. Marlo gave away this routine in 1966 to anyone who read his column in TOPS.
If you click on it, you'll find Mediatomb in the next menu, and if you'll click on that, you'll find all your mediafiles that you want your sweet Musicpal to be playing. Freecom musicpal software.
Cardician Makes Good, Marlo’s Princess and the Mental Sandwich are all very strong routines as well. There are plenty of well-written essential techniques that are going to improve your card work such as the Prayer Cull, Olram Subtly, Packet Switches and a Table Pass. To me the most beneficial things about working through this book has been the experience of tweaking Marlo’s routines to fit my performing style and circumstances. His material and writing style doesn’t spoon readers or students. Some care and attention is required to personalize this material and find the right balance of misdirection, technique and audience communication to create a memorable effect. I recommend the ebook available through L&L publishing.
Clipped Thought – the spectator thinks of a ace and the performer successfully place a paper clip on the thought of card behind his back. Marlo flushed this out into a three-phase routine.
I haven’t tried this as I am wary of the hands behind my back approach to card work. Perhaps this is unfair. Cardician Makes Good – An amusing transformation of four selected cards from deuces to aces with a surprise twist at the end. Remember and Forget – the spectator peeks at two cards.
He is asked to remembers one and forget the other. After cutting the pack the magician asks which card the spectator remembered. This card is shown to be on top of the deck. He places two deuces face up into the deck so that he sandwiches a card between them. This card turns to be the thought of card. The FuFu Switch – Same as the previous face up switch except that all of the cards are handled face up. A Flourish to Reverse.
– Moves the top card of the deck to the bottom with a casual flourish. Marlo’s Princess -The spectator is shown 5 cards and is asked to think of one of them. The performer also discloses the number that each spectator is also thinking of.
A lone red card in a blue pack turns out to be the card all three have thought of. Three methods as well as two extra routines. The Olram Subtlety. – To show the backs and faces of several cards, yet either the back or face of a card. Marlo’s Aces – Four aces vanish from their respective packets and appear in one packet. The Illusionary Bottom Deal – A deep 2nd finger take bottom deal. P.D.Mental Stab – The performer places a card face up into the pack. The card is shown to be next to a card merely thought of by a spectator. 9 February 1951 Effect – A spectator is asked to call stop as the front corner of the pack is riffled.
When stop is called a card is dealt to the table. This process is repeated a second time and three cards are dealt face down. The performer picks up the three cards and displays their faces in a fan that they are the three deuces.
The reason he suggests is that the first card the spectator stopped at is the fourth deuce. When the original selected card is turned face up it is revealed to be an ace. Puzzled he then changes the single ace to a deuce to make four of a kind.
Next the three deuces are turned over they and have changed to the aces. Lastly he changes the single deuce back to an ace to make four of a kind. The routine is ungaffed and the aces are ready to be used in whatever follow up effect the performer deems worthy. I like this routine a lot. Along with the visual appeal of the cards changing the routine offers and good opportunities to interact with the audience.
When used as an opener it gives ample motivation to continue to handle the four aces in an unusual manner for a follow up effect. After all of the changes between aces in deuces it make sense that the magician may want to place them in a card case, load them into a coat pocket or place them face up into a face down deck etc. Marlo limited his explanation to a single method that is fairly straightforward. Apparently this routine appears in his St Louis Lecture Notes under the same name. I am currently using this as a lead in piece to another Marlo effect called Reverso found in M.I.N.T. In my opinion it is a great way to get four of a kind into play for any follow up routine. Enjoy Posted in.
